Weekend Photo: Jaunty Hawthorn

photos

My favourite survivor hawthorn tree on our local walk at the hillfort, still hanging on at it's precarious angle but now in winter mode, all silvery bark and a skeleton of twisting branches on show.

A bank forming a v shaped ditch around an ancient hillfort, covered in grass and the brown autumnal colours of dying-back bracken. A hawthorn tree is already in leafless winter mode, the silvering bark and convoluted twists of its branches now highlighted by a lower-angled sun. It is growing out from the left edge of the v of the ditch's bank at a precarious-looking 45°.
